Fishing

Introduction to Fishing

Fishing is a gathering skill that is given to every character on creation. You do not need to visit a trainer to learn it, only when required to level to the next tier.
Fishing is the only Skill that requires a ‘tool’. You will need a Fishing Rod to fish!
Due to the complexities of Fishing compared to the other gathering skills, you will find a small series of quests to show you how it is done.
Defiants can find their Fishing quests in Kelari Refuge, Freemarch.
Guardians will find their Fishing quests in Argent Glade, Silverwood.
Completing these quests will show you how to fish and how to apply lures. If you completed the quest a long time ago, you can read them by following the links, follow along with your character to relearn the basics.
If you have lost your pole, you can buy one in the Rift Store under Crafting > Fishing > Unique Reagents. Just sort by price to bring it to the top.

How long is this gonna take?
Fishing is easily the hardest and longest gathering profession to level. The levels of concentration required to fish are just enough that you cant completely ‘zone out’, but not enough so that it is actually truly engaging and enjoyable. Fishing fails in most games in this way.
If you are starting from scratch with no fish or other mats for the crafting, then you will be levelling up by purely fishing, which by my guess would take around 50 hours total play time. (To reach 510)
If you are able to craft some of the items instead of just fishing, and you take the time to look for clever schools when needed, then maybe you could complete in 20 hours ish.
The truly experienced player that knows every trick, has all the mats ready and has use of the fishing rune could bring that down even further, I wanna say 5 hours, but I’m sure there are some that could do it in 2!
Of course you can just not be in a rush! Grab the fishing daily from Tempest Bay every day, go out to the random zone it suggests, fish until the quest is done, then continue to fish until you are bored of it, hand the quest in, and go about the rest of your day!

Useful Items From Fishing

Level 70 items

Fishing is all about the fish! The only useful item at level 70 is the ability to fish up Tenebrean Eels, which are required by Survivalists to create Gedlo Curry Pots (Raid feasts).

Other items of note

Fishing cannot create any gear or wardrobe items.
There are a few dimension items, including some Schools of fish.
With Uncle Stan’s Super Secret Lure you can fish up wardrobes, pets and even a mount!
Fishing is also useful for artifact hunters. Using the Rare Artifact attractors can be beneficial if you need artifacts from that zone.

Fishing Poles

There are a variety of different poles to craft as you level up your skill.

You start with a Beginner’s Fishing Pole, which you can buy in the Rift Store under Crafting > Fishing. It costs only 88 silver!
When you reach level 75 you can upgrade your beginner pole to a Standard Fishing Pole, then at 150 upgrade to the Metal Pole, the Imbued Pole at 225, and then the Lucky Pole at 300.
At level 375 you can craft your Brevanic Pole. All the pole recipes up to this point are trained at your Fishing skill trainer.

The Atragarian Fishing Pole is given as a reward from a Fishing Quest in the Nightmare Tide Zones when you hit level 450.

Stan’s Dyna-therm Fishing Pole is for the most Hardcore fishers.. you gotta get those numbers UP! The recipe for this pole is fished up at random, and it is a SUPER rare drop. You can find more information about this Pole, and the accompanying Lure on the special Uncle Stan’s Pole & Lure page
There are also 2 Poles you can buy for Affinity (premium currency), Cosmological Fishin’ Pole, and Stan’s Infra-cell Fishin’ Pole. It is not necessary to buy these poles as they do the same as Stan’s Dyna-therm Fishing Pole.

While you are fishing, you will loot junk and grey items between the fish. Crafting higher level poles will reduce the amount of grey items that you loot, granting you more fish! Upgrading your pole will also change how it looks, and allow you to use higher level Lures on them.

Catching Fish

Head out to the water, click your fishing pole and your mouse cursor will change into the ‘use hand’ icon.
As you hover over the water, there will be a round symbol to tell you which kind of water it is..

Red Symbol - No fish here!
Blue Symbol - Shallow Water Fish
Yellow Symbol - Deep Water Fish
Green Symbol - Schools or treasure

You need to be stood on solid ground, or in shallow water to be able to fish. If you go into deep water and start swimming then you wont be able to cast a line. All schools of fish should be reachable!

Click where the symbol on the water is and you will cast your line there. Wait for your mouse to turn into the ‘fish’ symbol and then left click to reel the fish in, it may take a few tries before the fish is caught successfully.

Tracking Schools of Fish

In Rift you can fish in ANY water, including most of the fountains, pools, puddles, to the great lakes, and oceans.
Within these bodies of water, there are ‘hot spots’ of fish called Fishing Schools.
You can track these Schools of fish by using your ‘Track Fish Ability’.
Find the ability in the General tab of your ability book. Switch it on to apply a buff that allows you to see all schools of fish on the mini map.

The schools will appear as blue diamonds. There are 4 different kinds.. Schools of Fish, Schools of Rare Fish, Schools of Clever Fish, and Sunken Boats. Hover over the diamonds to see which kind you have found.
You will be able to see the schools of fish, swimming in a small circle just below the water.

Fishing in schools will give you more specific loot/results than swimming in open water.

  • Schools of Fish – Guarantees you fish up a fish! No grey items here.
  • Schools of Rare Fish – Gives rare or special fish for that particular zone.
  • Schools of Clever Fish – These pools will give you a fishing skill point for longer than the rest of the zone.
  • Sunken Boats – These give artifacts!

Using these fishing schools can dramatically reduce the amount of fishing that you need to do in order to level up. You can start fishing in Schools when you are 5 levels above the minimum zone requirement.

When you find a school, be sure to switch shards at that spot to check for more, as they usually spawn in the same places.

Levelling your Fishing Skill

How to level

There are 2 main way to gain skill points.
The first is to actually fish! Go out into the world and fish in waters that give you XP at your current skill level.
The second is to craft the various lures, dimension bits, and other items that you can train for from your fishing trainer. Or from recipes bought in the Rift Store.

In the lower Mathosian zones, you will get skill points very quickly. But as you gain levels, you will need more successful casts to gain each skill point. Fishing in a zone that is close to your current fishing level is supposed to give you better skill point gain, but I found little difference between staying in lower zones or moving on to higher zones. The main difference of course is which fish you loot!
Technically you could level all the way to 525 in Freemarch, just visiting your trainer each skill tier to be able to continue levelling.

The crafting is certainly less time consuming that actually fishing.. but you will need fish as ingredients for the crafting! So a mix of fishing and crafting is usually best, especially for newer players. You can of course try to buy fish on the Auction House, or ask players for spares.

You will need to visit a Fishing Trainer to learn new recipes and to go up each Skill Tier at level 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, and 525.
The Tempest bay Fishing Trainer is at /setwaypoint 12667 11550
If you are below level 50 and haven’t been to Tempest Bay yet then Defiants can find a Fishing Trainer in Meridian at /setwaypoint 6033 5203
Guardians can find their Fishing Trainer in Sanctum at /setwaypoint 7504 2980

Boosting skill gain

You can use a Skill orb! This will increase your chances of gaining a skill point while fishing and also while crafting fishing items. Skill Orbs are available in the Rift Store for credits only. If you are going to buy one, be sure to have a bunch of fish ready so you can mostly craft to skill up and really get the most out of the 2 hour timer.
There is also a Guild Perk called ‘Journeyman‘ that will increase your chance of gaining a skill point.

The easiest way to boost your skill gain is to look for Schools of Clever Fish and use them! Spending a little extra time searching for a school will save you time fishing. You may even want to clear other schools to allow more clever schools to spawn. To clear the other pools, you just need to fish one fish from them and then about a minute later they will despawn.

Celestial Fishing Rune

If you already have high level characters then you may want to get yourself a Celestial Fishing Rune. Using the Rune will allow you to fish in higher level areas than normal, and more importantly, will allow you to learn recipes that are higher than your actual skill level and then craft those items to skill up more.
By carefully wearing and then removing the rune at different stages, you can skip a lot more fishing! Remember you can just take the shoulders with the rune applied off, you don’t need to use a rune remover.
For Instance: At skill level 300, you can add the rune to bump up to 350. You can then train the recipe for Enduring Magnetic lure. You can craft this lure up to the virtual skill 375, bringing your actual skill level to 325. You can then remove the rune and craft the Rare Brevanic fish lure, levelling your skill up to 350. Pop the rune on again and you will be level 400, able to craft more higher level items.
Continue swapping out your shoulders to maximise your skill ups.

What to do with all the fish?

The fish you get while levelling fishing can be used to craft items within fishing to give you a few extra skill points. But you will likely still have a bunch left over! These can be used to help level up your Survivalist skill. Any others can be used to craft the various dimension items from fishing, or the costume items from survival. If you do not require any of these, then any fish that are not from Prophecy zones can be sold or put on a long term storage alt. Keep the Prophecy fish for those craft dailies!

Fishing
  • Fishing in Shimmersand or Stillmoor.
  • In Stillmoor, there is a small lake at /setwaypoint 2031 1986 with Deep and Shallow water.
  • At this point, levelling is going to slow down, with more casts required per skill point. It is even more time saving to find those clever schools! You will need to skill up to level 215 before you can use the schools. It is much easier to find them along the coastline of Shimmersand than in the few small lakes of Stillmoor.

300 - 375 - Storm Legion Zones

Level 300 - 375 -- Grandmaster
Fishing
  • You can start Fishing in the lower Storm Legion zones from level 270 onwards.
  • You can go to a trainer in Tempest Bay to train for the ‘Grandmaster’ tier of Fishing when you hit level 295-300.
  • Craft the new Lucky Fishing Pole at level 300.
  • Schools of Clever fish will help speed up the levelling. I find the southern coast of Pelladane to be a good spot to find these. You will need skill level 275+ to use them.
  • It is now 12 or more normal casts to get a skill point, so try to craft some of the recipes!
  • Once you hit level 325 you can easily craft all the way to 375, you just need some fish! The last 2 skill points will require quite a few crafts.
Crafting
  • At Level 300 – You can train for Lucky Fishing Pole. The Fishing Pole is great one to craft 5 times, you just need some Composite Cloth. No need to keep the duplicates as it won’t upgrade anymore.
  • At Level 315 – You can buy Recipes for Giant Pondleaper Lure, and Sunhorse Lure, these are bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft these lures.
  • At Level 325 – You can train for Rare Brevanic Fish Lure. This requires some blue Storm Legion fish, but stays an orange craft for a good 20 levels, so its a nice chunk of skill points. Use the first couple you craft to fish up more of the blue fish then craft as many more as you can! You could even keep crafting these until you hit 350.
  • At Level 325 – You can buy Recipes for Sharpfin Lure, and Veiled Octopus Lure, these are bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft these lures. These go grey very quickly and are not really worth it.
  • At Level 350 – You can train for Enduring Magnetic Lure. Requires a bunch of the green fish to craft, but a really nice skill boost, giving Skill points all the way to 375.
  • At Level 350 – You can also grab the Enduring Trophy Lure recipe from the ‘Fish Exchange – Dusken Eel’ Quest in Pelladane /setwaypoint 7218 5609 You are more likely to want these lures if you are going to be going back to previous zones for Trophy fish. These are also a great skill boost, giving Skill points all the way to 375.

  • At Level 375 – Get the Twisted Lure recipe from the Tar Pools quest picked up from Krocu Grauxlo in Tempest Bay – /setwaypoint 12669 11548
  • At Level 375 – You can buy a Recipe for the Skygrazer Manta Lure, this is bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft this lure.
  • At Level 400 – You can buy a Recipe for the Oorl Remora Lure, this is bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft this lure.
  • Continue to do the Dailies from Margle Palace and you will hopefully get the recipes for Rare Atragarian Artifact Attractor, and the Atragarian Fishing Pole. Both of these can be learned from level 420.
  • At Level 420 – You can buy a Recipe for the Yellow Petrel Lure, this is bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft this lure.
  • At Level 445 – You can buy a Recipe for the Seer Eel Lure, this is bought with craft marks in the rift store. You will need fish to craft this lure.

Level 450 Planar Crafting

At level 450 Savant level Planar Crafting will become available to you.
In the rift store will be 6 Planar Poles to buy, with matching Lures.
These Poles, used with their Lures, will allow you to fish up unique reagents that are used for level 65 Planar Crafting. These reagents also drop from the Savant Level crafting rifts. You will need one of the Imperishable mats to be able to craft the pole.
These materials can be used to craft unique wardrobe items that are either not available elsewhere, or are super rare raid drops.

  • Abhorrent Fishing Pole used with an Abhorrent Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Darkness
  • Blazing Fishing Pole used with a Blazing Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Flame
  • Charged Fishing Pole used with a Charged Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Wind
  • Faetouched Fishing Pole used with a Faetouched Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Life
  • Telluric Fishing Pole used with a Telluric Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Terrene
  • Tidal Fishing Pole used with a Tidal Planar Lure gives you a good chance to fish up an Imperishable Tide

None of this is useful at end game. If you do not want these wardrobe items then you can just ignore this level of Planar Crafting and continue your journey to 525 skill. If however you want to farm some of these mats to be able to craft the wardrobes, then it may be worth sticking to this level of Fishing for a bit so you can grab the rifts from the weekly quest and farm the Imperishable mats to be able to craft the poles.
You can always level fishing on an alt (or multiple alts) to this level and then send the craft rift lures to your main to complete.

Once you level your Fishing Skill to Visionary and level past 450, the weekly quest that awards the correct level Crifts will no longer be available to you.
The Imperishable mats are also available for credits on the Rift Store.. We recommend you do not buy them this way!

Fish Looted in Each Zone

The Common fish, are often shared between zone clusters. Rare fish are specific to just one zone.
You will find different fish in Shallow and Deep water.

In the Mathosian 0-50 areas, there are 64 kinds of fish.
In the Storm Legion 50-60 areas there are 16 kinds of fish.
In the Nightmare Tide 60-65 areas, there are 6 types of fish.
The Prophecy of Ahnket 65-70 areas only have 3 kinds of fish.
This gives us 90 types of fish total.

The Fishing Caches are mostly Dimension Items and Artifacts. They also drop small amounts of crafting marks, Single use lures, and some Fishing or Survival Recipes.

This cheevo starts as:
Fishing A-fish-ionado – Become a fully skilled savant in Fishing.

Train the Savant tier at level 375, you will become fully skilled when you hit level 450.

Supreme Fisherman

Catch 10,000 Fish. – Awards the title ‘Lady of the Lakes’ or ‘Lord of the Lakes’

This seems like a lot.. it is.. but it is also just a small amount compared to what you will need to fish to get the rest of these cheevos!

This cheevo starts as:

Apprentice Fisherman – Catch 100 Fish. – Awards the title ‘Fisherman’
Journeyman Fisherman – Catch 500 Fish.
Dedicated Fisherman –
Catch 1,000 Fish.
Artisan Fisherman – Catch 5,000 Fish.

Mathosian Fishing
Ultimate Angler

Complete all Fishing achievements in Mathosia. – Awards the title ‘Angler’

A Collection of Trophies

Complete all Trophy Fish artifacts sets in Mathosia.

Hand in the completed Trophy Artifact sets. It does not matter where you source your artifacts to complete your sets, however I suggest just fishing them up as you will need to for the next cheevo!

Master Trophy Angler

Catch all Trophy Fish in Mathosia.
You must fish up each Trophy Fish from the water to credit this cheevo. Buying them from Auction, or looting from minions or other caches will not credit.

This cheevo starts as:

Trophy Catch – Catch a Trophy Fish in Mathosia.
Trophy Angler – Catch 10 Trophy Fish in Mathosia.

Trophy Lures

Using a Trophy Lure will really help you speed up this cheevo.. However it will still take a heck of a lot of fishing, you should expect to spend many hours fishing in each zone to get each Trophy Fish. There are 2 Trophy lures available that will both triple your chances of catching a Trophy Fish. The Enduring Lure lasts slightly longer than the Timed Lure.

Timed Trophy Lure

This is the better one to use for this cheevo to start with as it uses fish from Mathosia to create it. This means that while farming the fish, you can hopefully tick off a few of the Trophy fish from the required list.

The Lure requires:

Aestivating Nautilus – From deep water in Droughtlands

Coldwater Seabug – From deep water in Iron Pine Peak

Enduring Trophy Lure

The Enduring Trophy Lure lasts slightly longer but requires Storm Legion fish to craft.

The lure requires:

Sharpfin – From deep water in Brevane

Veiled Octopus – From deep water in Dusken

Sunhorse – From shallow water in Dusken.

The Reward for completing this cheevo is the
Tame Isle Crab companion pet.

A specific fish may be found in multiple zones, but the Trophy version can only be fished up in ONE zone.

Fishing for Artifacts

Complete all Fishing artifact sets in Mathosia.

All of these sets can be fished up from the waters while fishing in any of the Mathosian zones.

Sunken Treasure

Fish up Sunken Treasure in Mathosia.
Using a Trophy Lure will help with this, but the Treasure chests are common enough that you shouldn’t need one.

The Rarest Catch

Catch all Rare Fish in Mathosia.

This cheevo starts as:

Rare Catch – Catch a Rare Fish in Mathosia.
Rarer Catch – Catch 10 Different Rare Fish in Mathosia.

These are the Blue fish, easy enough to do, just go fishing!
Use the fish location chart above if you miss a couple and don’t know from where.
